5 Saturdays Scholarships
Our mission is to provide the 5 Saturdays training and knowledge to people willing to build local communities populated with volunteer professionals who mentor students and expose them to a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agile, and Math (STEAM) and lean business. As individuals, we help people and groups learn to innovate and discover solutions to common and complex problems by emphasizing:
Continual discovery above instructions
Team collaboration above individualism
Positive inquiry above rhetorical questions
Respect for people above winning
We provide an opportunity for our student body to apply for Scholarship funds in order to support them as they apply themselves in furthering their education. The 5 Saturdays leadership council will review applications and make awards based on students who have demonstrated the core guiding principles we have built the organization around: Discovery, Collaboration, Inquiry and Respect. 5 Saturdays alumni will receive preference especially when participated as a learning facilitator.
Attending the 5 Saturdays program have been an amazing and life changing experience after three years. I have seen the growth of this program from the first year at Estancia High School to how it is now. In the first year we learned how to use Alice and created our own digital story. The second year, we learned to build and create our own website as a group. Finally, the third year provided two different workshop options. You can either choose from 1) starting your own business or 2) coding to create a mobile application game so you can use on your phone. This experience has taught me after these group projects to communicate, use teamwork, and have fun at the same time. Now with these skills and some others, I got my first job and it has not been easy because I was very quiet and shy. Now with the skills they taught me how the interview works (sitting up straight, how to properly handshake, what to expect), and the interview went very well. Last, it taught me how to use time management. This program has taught us to use a “Kanban board”, which is a board you use to plan out your day and see how your much you have finished and accomplished at the end. Now that I go to college I have to maintain my schedule and write down what homework I have to do. As my day goes by, I see what homework I have done.
As a scholarship recipient, it has been very helpful because it has paid for the majority of my books. Although I work, I had to pay off tuition and I didn’t have enough to pay off my books and with this scholarship, it has helped tremendously. I will like to thank Dr. Dave and the staff for this scholarship and for what they have done to teach and give me these skills. Thank you.
